I have a theory.....and it's only a theory......James played on a lot
of Tyrone Davis' songs for Dakar. I say this because Dakar was a subsidiary
of Brunswick (home of the Jackie Wilson hits that James played on), and
so it would make sense that Dakar could have easily used James on their
tracks from time to time. But the MAIN thing is........listen to Tyrone's
songs "Turn Back the Hands of Time" and "Is it Something
That You Got." That is unmistakable James Jamerson's runs. Does anyone
have anything definitive on this? I do believe that it's James..............
your opinions, anyone? Thank you.......Mark Weiss, Potomac, MD
Well we all know James did quite a bit of moonlighting!!
and used to go to Chicago to record. It will be very interesting to see
if we get feedback on this.. shame Tyrone is no longer with us to ask.
Also you are talking of 1969 and 1970, by this time quite a number of
bassists had JJ's style and technique, although some lacked his special
UMPH!! ..... Beverley/webmistress

It is harder to tell by this date, although the
bassist definately has JJ's tricks, it does not sound like the rest of
the Funk Brothers .. anon

I hauled out my 45s and took a listen to
my late '60s Brunswick sides. Strange to say, whoever they had playing
bass on such songs as Barbara Acklin's Am I The Same Girl (aka Soulful
Strut) and Love Makes A Woman is quite fully capable of emulating JJ,
so finding out who it was on those sessions might solve the mystery. The
more Chicago stuff I hear, the more I notice how strong an influence JJ
had from as early as '67. Listening even to a song like Get On Up by the
Esquires showed me that musicians in that area were hip to JJ. So maybe
whoever that was on the other Brunswick sides also did Tyrone Davis' song
as well. Would make sense and you're right, it's hard to tell many times
what JJ did and didn't do as his influence grew
.. Mark
The bassist playing on Barbara Acklin's is another
unsung hero, Bernard Reed.
Bernard Reed was the session bassist at the Brunswick Chicago studio at
this time - he is a great bass player. So far I haven't found him connected
to the Tyrone Davis Dakar sessions, but I have found Bernard Reed playing
bass with Tyrone at Columbia Studios, 1976 onwards ..

UPDATE:
Hi , The
Brunswick sessions were almost all done by Bernard Reed. He tracked hundreds
of sessions with Brunswick and throughout the city with many of the Chicago
labels. He's featured on the Brunswick recordings of: Tyrone Davis (everything
but the song "Turn Back the Hands of Time" which he played the
demo on), Gene Chandler, Barbara Acklin, Jackie Wilson (he played the
demo of "Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher"), early Chi-Lites
(the kind that Beyonce samples), Artistics, etc. After a stint working
with Brunswick, he and the house band (The Jaylynne Sound) left and formed
the Pieces of Peace. They backed most of Syl Johnson's Twinight recordings.
That's Bernard throwing done a wicked by on "Is It Because I'm Black"
and "Concrete Reservation".
Happily, Bernard is alive and well in Chicago. He is still gigging and
tracking.
Best, Colin

Hi my name is David Bell And I am a huge James Jamerson Fan and I have
The uncanny ability to spot James Jamerson on a track when I hear. Thats
how much of a fan I am. I also have a track for you it's "Young hearts
run free" by Candi Staton I also believe he played on that album
as well as the album that included "Victum".
I'm sorry but to the person that does not know but if you really sit down
and listen to "If I Were your Woman" and "Midnight Train
To Georgia" There's no doubt that it is JAMES JAMERSON ON THOSE TWO
RECORDINGS!!!!!!
You could be right about Candi Staton, she left
the southern soul scene in 1975 for California and was produced by Dave
Crawford, who propelled her into stardom with "Young Hearts Run Free"
and "Victim." in 1976/78
. But I am sorry "If I Were your Woman" and the award winning
"Midnight Train To Georgia" is definately Bob Babbitt.
UPDATE: the
bassist is
the L.A. studio bass player.. Scott Edwards
on Candi Staton's "Young Hearts Run Free" .. Beverley/webmistress

do you know who plays bass on the Temptations version of "Someday
at Christmas"? I enjoy it a lot, but I haven't been able to find
out. I'm guessing it's either Jamerson or Babbit. Please help.
Hi there, I think it is Eddie
Watkins is on most of The Temptations 1970 'Christmas Card' album.
James is only on 2 of the tracks.. 'Let It Snow' and 'Little Drummer Boy'.
(Bob Babbitt's first album with the Temptations was 'Sky's the Limit'
1971)

Is James Jamerson the bassist on Im in a Different World
by The Four Tops? Cheers, Dave
Hi Dave, I have searched & searched this title.
It is very interesting as this is a left over, one of HDH productions.
Im in a Different World
was recorded earlier than when the rest of the album Yesterday's Dreams
was made, and is the only HDH track on the album. (HDH had left Motown
when this album was put together '68) HDH have attested to the fact that
James Jamerson played on almost every one of their productions, and they
never allowed others to produce songs that they had written. The
Four Tops were very loyal to JJ too, seems
very likely JJ will be on many of the tracks. Eddie
Watkins was the other bassist at this time.

hey, just picked up the supremes sing rodgers and hart cd, and i have
yet to open it, i only bought it cuz i was hoping it would be jamerson
playing some nice jazz. could you possibly confirm whether or not he played
on this album, i had a hard time finding musician credits, thanks - Dan
Hi, most of these tracks I think were recorded in
L.A. in 1966 and some were recored live at The Copracabana Club N.Y. in
1967, so it seems very unlikely James is on any of them, sorry. Enjoy
the CD anyway.. it has some excellent reveiws.

DENNIS PARKER
IS THE BASSIST ON Al Wilson's "Show & Tell"
Hi, I don´t want to start another Kaye/Jamerson type discussion,
and I don´t really know about any others, but Al Wilson´s
"Show and Tell" was definitely NOT James Jamerson. I rememember
especially because it was my FIRST Billboard #1 hit single! I am the bassist
on ALL the songs on the album, produced by Jerry Fuller and arranged and
musical directed by H. B. Barnum. ~ Dennis Parker
Hi Mr. Parker.. Thankyou Dennis for your email..
so pleased you have emailed with your impute and information, that is
what this page is about .. to try and get a truer discography and expel
some of the myths, but also give JJ the credit where it SHOULD go.. definitely
NOT for someone else's work.. JJ had enough of his own!!

Hello, I am a big Funk Brothers & James Jamerson fan. One question
that I had was if it was either he or Babbitt that did a song called "The
Streetbeater" or otherwise known as the Sanford & Son theme.
This has been on my mind for quite a while now.
Fabulous Quincy Jones track, Streetbeater ... but
it wasn't James Jamerson doing the bass line, it was the also great Chuck
Rainey on bass. This can be verified on his website ~ Big Thanks To Gavin
~

Nice Jamerson page! One small correction for you though - Michael Hendersdon
is the bass player on 1970's Stevie Wonder "Live at the Talk of the
Town" (his playing is mindblowing - he is so full of Jamerson inspired
energy). I have the album and Stevie Wonder introduces Mike Henderson
in the rhythm section.
Thankyou for that information.
I did know Mike Henderson was Stevie Wonder's touring bassist around the
early to mid 70's. As it was a 'special' outside venue to be recorded
~ I wonder if both bassists were there, or he is dubbed on the
end production. JJ has been credited for being on this album by several
record sites.

I believe he played on 'Distant Lover' from the 'Lets Get It On' album
Yes, James is the credited bassist on this album.
Also on this album Wilton Felder is listed as a guest bassist, although
he is famous for his saxophone playing he also doubles on electric bass.
Whether he played along side James on a few tracks or on his own I do
not know.

If I'm not mistaken it sure sounds like James and some of the other Funks
playing on The Reflections (Just Like) Romeo and Juliet. The track was
recorded at Golden World in 1964. What do you think? - Jeff
We have a definate YES. After a bit of research
of this title, I have found James was definately the moonlighting bassist
on this great track! It was Golden Worlds
biggest hit too.

Did he play on'' Neither one of us'' by Gladys Knight?
"Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to
Say Goodbye)", was the Pips biggest Motown hit '72 .. #1 R&B
/ #2 pop hit. That single also happened to be their last Motown hit, Gladys
Knight & the Pips departed Motown for Buddah Records in 1973. I would
imagine it is a JJ track. Bob Babbitt only did one with the Pips at Motown...
1971's "If I Were your Woman" and then the grammy award winning
1973's "Midnight Train To Georgia" with Buddah Label.
Eddie
Watkins was the other bassist at this time and I haven't as yet found
much out about Eddie Watkins.
UPDATE: I have
been in contact with Eddie Watkins... who is in the middle of a new project.
When time permits he will help and try to make a list of his Motown credits.

Hello there; I see 'Behind a painted smile' is not on your list. Do you
happen to know who played bass on this great recording?
Thanks, and best wishes, Alan
This is a track from
1967's "Soul on the Rocks" the Isley Brother's second and last
Motown album, and with Holland-Dozier-Holland virtually on strike most
of the album was turned over to Ivy Jo Hunter. Listening to the album
I would definately say it is James on that track. James did their first
album "This Old Heart Of Mine". The only other bassist at that
time was Tony Newton. He sat in on sessions at motown when James was too
busy or they had double bass sessions.

People have asked where they can get
a copy of James Jamerson's
"Fever In The Funk House"
It is the last track on the album "Motown
Year By Year: The Sound of Young America, 1969" various artists

I thought you might like to add this one. Although
I don't know for sure I just know it's his bass playing on Marv Johnson's
"I'll Pick A Rose For My Rose". It's so bouncy it's got his
signature all over it.
Yes certainly sounds like James' bounce. Marv Johnson's success came prior
to his signing to Motown; though he recorded in the Snakepit as Berry's
first real artist, working a lot with James. Berry Gordy, leased many
of Marv's singles to United Artists Records, they were hits in UK &
Europe but not released in US. "I'll
Pick a Rose for My Rose," being one of these, became a number one
in UK in 1969,
but was actually recorded in 1966, the B side "I Love the Way You
Love" recorded in 1960 would probably be James, as may be Marv's
other three 1960 US hits "You've Got To Move Two Mountains"
"Happy Days" & "Merry-go-round" or
were they Clarence Isabell, Willie Green orTweed Beard???

Do you know if Jamerson played on the Temptations' Live album that was
released in about 1967? . . . . This was a "One
Night Only" performance done especially to record and held in Detroit
City, 1967, remastered onto CD May 18th 1999. My research shows a (still)
virtually unknown motown bassist has credit
for the bass line on this album, bassist Bill Upchurch. (No relative to
the great Phil Upchurch)

Hellow, Is that Jamerson on The Temptations ' Fan
the flame" and Jr. Walkers '' Home cookin''.
Thank you for so much information on the man who changed the way the bass
is played in popular music. . . .
'Fan The Flame' is a track from the
1968 album 'Wish It Would Rain'. Ruffin's last album with Temptations
before going solo. My research: I have found a review of this album praising
Jamerson's amazing bass playing. So
to the first question yes it's James. So this puts 8 more titles on the
list.
Jr
Walker however, had his own band to create his own
sound 'The All-Stars'.. BUT...Yes it is JJ on
'Home Cookin' it
is one of James Jamerson' great performances.

hello. i`m from Mexico, do you know if james play
in the # 1 "touch me in the morning"
in 1973. thanks for your time ... toño .
. . 1973 "Touch Me In The Morning" This track was a Grammy Nominee.
I do know Bob Babbit backed Diana Ross on that track.
It was recorded the year Motown moved to L.A.. James followed to LA too,
but
from the summer of '73 he was on a different
understanding with Motown and he toured a lot with Marvin Gaye in the
following 12 months
of the move.

Hello,
would you know if James Jamerson played on Chris Clarks "Love's gone
Bad" from 1966 .
. . It is very likely to be James Jamerson.
The Funk Brothers did all the studio recordings. However
bassist Tony
Newton was on Gordy's pay list at that time.
Babbitt was not
yet at Motown, the first track he worked
on in the studio was with Stevie Wonder 'We Can
Work It Out.' for the Signed, Sealed, Delivered
'70 album
~

Also
been asked if James played on The Tempation's track "Paridise"
This track is from the 1963 Album "Meet
The Temptations" which includes ~ The
Way You Do The Things You Do, I Want A Love I Can See, (You're My) Dream
Come True, Paradise, May I Have This Dance, Isn't She Pretty, Just Let
Me Know, Your Wonderful Love, The Further You Look The Less You See, Check
Yourself, Slow Down Heart, Farewell My Love.
Back in 1963 James Jamerson backed 99% of ALL motown
hayday releases. As I mentioned before there must be 100's of album
tracks and B sides that should be credited to James. Up on one of the
lists above a few of the tracks HAVE been proved to be his.. so, the way
they recorded at Hitsville back then ~ he may have done the whole album.

I have been asked if JJ is playing on the Stevie Wonder track "Signed,
Sealed & Delivered" As you see on the above latest list,
he appears on the same named Album.
but Bob Babbit was the bassist
on "Signed,
Sealed & Delivered" Bob
was employed by Motown on many occasions, he became one of the Funk Brothers
and at times understudied for James. . . . Thanks Ted for taking time
to email.

Hi, I was wondering, if James Jamerson possibly played the great bass
on "You to me are everything" from The Real Thing in ´76.
Best regards Matthias.
Good bass on that track, Matthias, but NO The Great
JJ was not the bassist in this case.
And there are no musician credits per usual for it!! But there is a big
chance it may have been the very respected session bassist/ producer Jerome
Rimson, as he produced this debute album.
UPDATE:
I can now definately
say that Jerome Rimson was the bassists on this track. Jerome who knew
James says he might send me a tribute of James for this site when he gets
time ... he is just finishing his book.. which sounds great.
