ISLE of WIGHT
MUSIC FESTIVAL
1970
The 1970 Isle of Wight Festival was held on August 26 - 31, 1970. It was held on West Afton Down an area on the Western side of the Isle of Wight. It was the last of three consecutive music festivals to take place on the island between 1968 and 1970. It was widely acknowledged as the largest musical event of its time (until Summer Jam at Watkins Glen in 1973), greater than the attendance of Live Aid, Woodstock and Rock in Rio. The Guinness Book of Records has cited its attendance as 600,000 - the revellers outnumbering the 100,000 residents by six to one. Wonderous tales of this 1970, 5 day festival, with it's huge impressive line-up, are still discussed today, but the event caused so much stress to the islanders, that future festivals on the island were banned and it was 32 years before the next festival would be held on the Isle Of Wight. On a sad note, it is also remembered for Jimi Hendrix, who played his last gig there on Sunday 30th August (2am Aug 31st), tragically 18 days later, September 18th, he was pronounced dead.
